Discrete Breathers - Recent Results and Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
Nontopological spatially localized time periodic excitations coined discrete breathers are generic solutions for lattice Hamiltonians. I present recent results including the spatial decay of discrete breathers in systems with interactions decaying algebraically in space, the properties of the static deformation accompanying a breather excitation in low-symmetry lattice Hamiltonians with Goldstone modes, nonzero energy thresholds in lattice dimensions d ≥ 2, models with analytic solutions and compact solutions. Finally I will discuss several experimental applications.

Discrete breathers in carbon nanotubes
We study large-amplitude oscillations of carbon nanotubes with chiralities (m, 0) and (m,m) and predict the existence of spatially localized nonlinear modes in the form of discrete breathers. In nanotubes with the index (m, 0) we find three types of discrete breathers associate with longitudinal, radial, and torsion anharmonic vibrations, however only the twisting breathers are found to be nonr...
متن کاملInteraction of moving discrete breathers with vacancies
In this paper a Frenkel–Kontorova model with a nonlinear interaction potential is used to describe a vacancy defect in a crystal. According to recent numerical results [Cuevas et al. Phys. Lett. A 315, 364 (2003)] the vacancy can migrate when it interacts with a moving breather. We study more thoroughly the phenomenology caused by the interaction of moving breathers with a single vacancy and al...
متن کاملDiscrete breathers in thermal equilibrium: distributions and energy gaps
We study a discrete two-dimensional nonlinear system that allows for discrete breather solutions. We perform a spectral analysis of the lattice dynamics at thermal equilibrium and use a cooling technique to measure the amount of breathers at thermal equilibrium. Our results confirm the existence of an energy threshold for discrete breathers. The cooling method provides with a novel computationa...
متن کاملDiscrete breathers for a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger ring coupled to a central site.
We examine the existence and properties of certain discrete breathers for a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model where all but one site are placed in a ring and coupled to the additional central site. The discrete breathers we focus on are stationary solutions mainly localized on one or a few of the ring sites and possibly also the central site. By numerical methods, we trace out and study the ...
متن کاملBreathers in hydrogen-bonded chains
In the framework of the one-component model for hydrogen-bonded chains developed by Zolotaryuk and Pnevmatikos [Phys. Lett. A 143 (1990) 233], we study analytically and numerically breather excitations in the continuum and the discrete-carrier limits. We demonstrate that the breathers show high-stability properties especially in the case when the on-site potential is symmetric. We also consider...
